As a musician himself — upright bass, bandleader — he understands what's actually inside the case: a dense, unbalanced, unforgiving instrument that punishes a careless mover. He's built and collected 12 different piano boards over the years, one for nearly every situation a stairwell, tight turn, or third-floor walk-up can throw at him.
